Curricullum
Solomon Schechter Academy follows the program of studies prescribed by the State of New Jersey. Major areas covered are English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Topics are studied together by the entire study group using the text as a starting point, with various enrichment and audio-visual materials used as supplements. The teacher will modify the expectations for each child according to his or her ability.
In the other major content areas of reading, mathematics, writing, and spelling, students will be assigned to study groups with other students capable of working on a comparable level. Each group will have its own materials and texts. By working in smaller groups, each student is able to experience a sense of challenge as well as success because the work is appropriate to the level of the group.
Beginning in Kindergarten, all students have computer instruction in our state-of-the-art lab. We offer a music, art and physical education program. A science lab provides a conducive environment for exploring. Students have weekly supervised visits to our library to check out books. Numerous speakers, concerts and cultural programs are brought to the school. There is also a monthly program of Breakfast with the Rabbi, allowing Rabbi Hammerman time with all our students.
Each class goes on field trips during the year. Grade 4 participates in a special Shabbaton at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires and Grade 6 participates in a 4-day overnight environmental camping experience at Camp Teva. The D.A.R.E. program is offered to Grade 5, as scheduled by the Ocean County Sheriff's Department. Grade 7 participates in "The Topic is Sandy Hook", an Environmental Science and Social Studies Program. Grade 8 visits Head Start in Lakewood each week as part of their community service program. The eighth grade culminates in a two week trip to Israel.
